Improving Pokemon: the Poison-type

Image
P oison was the most common type in Generation I, only to be replaced by Water in the later games. It is also, along with Bug and Grass, one of my favorite types and, in my humble opinion, the most interesting to design concepts for.  Competitively, Poison sits in a comfortable niche as of late. Since the introduction of Fairy-type in Generation VI, Poison was catapulted into becoming (arguably) one of the top defensive types in the game, right after Steel. With a defensive resistance to Fairy, Poison became a viable type to have on any competitive team that wanted to run Dragons. Poison has always been a good supportive type, however: Poison-type Pokémon are immune to the poison-status (to the shock of nobody); Poison not only resists Fairy, but also resists Grass, Bug, Fighting, and itself; Poison types "absorb" Toxic Spikes off the field (making them a good hazard cleaner in that regard); the move Toxic is 100% accurate when used by a Poison-type (as of Generation VI); ...

This all taken from a post I made on 4chan about changes I would like to see to the battle mechanics of Pokémon. Enjoy.

Who wants to Smash?: 3rd Party Additions

Image
N ow that Smash is confirmed to be coming for Nintendo Switch at the end of 2018, I wanted to share my own thoughts about the roster. The Smash hype season is always such a glorious time, fraught with emotion and anticipation for what may come.  Sakurai himself noted that he wanted Smash Bros. to represent "the history of video games," and remarked that Smash 4 was the biggest celebration of that yet. With the combination of first party and third party characters, you could make a pretty good argument that story of video games as a whole is represented well within that title. HOWEVER, I think there are still some parts of that history which are missing. And since the floodgates opened up to 3rd party characters in Smash 4, I think it's safe to say that we will be getting even more non-Nintendo characters in the next game and that all bets are off over who or what can get in. So, here is my not-so-exhaustive list of what 3rd party characters I want to be included. Th...

Pokemon Switch Ideas

So with the rumor that Gen 8 will have a revamped battle system and a bigger emphasis on world building, I got thinking about some changes I'd be cool with seeing in the Pokemon Switch game. Hear me out and feel free to contribute: -Crafting Want a Choice Band? Charcoal? Focus Sash? Well you now have to make that shit. Basically, you can pick up anything and everything from the overworld to make hold items for your Pokemon. You can still buy or win a lot of them, but this adds an extra personal touch. -Stamina Do away with PP and give each Pokemon a new stat: Stamina. Stamina would be a flat and unchanging stat between Pokemon of the same evolutionary stage, more or less. All fully evolved Pokemon would have 100, for example, while all lowest stage Pokemon would have 50. Moves now tap into Stamina for their power, and if a Pokemon runs out of Stamina they are forced to Struggle. This means that using a lot of traditionally low PP moves will drain Stamina faster, making it harder ...

Improving Pokemon: New Moves Challenge - Water Type

Image
Today I'll be taking a look at ways to improve Water-types in Pokemon while only focusing on introducing new move concepts. Water Pokemon in general hit the right notes. The type itself has a respectable amount of advantages and weaknesses. As far as its move choices, the type already has a variety of offensive options, including multiple special and physical attacks as well as a reliable priority move. Also, the statistical breakdown of Water-type Pokemon is respectably diverse, with a refreshing selection of defensive, offensive, and support-based Pokemon to choose from. Interestingly as well, the Water-type is one of only two types that has been paired with every other type in the game at least once --  a unique honor that adds to its versatility. Despite that range of diversity, however, I would be remiss if I didn't mention "bulky Water-types ." While there is variety, Water is largely dominated by the sphere of influence that is the defensive Water-type...

Improving Pokemon: New Move Challenge - Dark Type

Image
Dark-type used to suffer, but it is actually quite good in the current meta. When it was introduced in Gen II, it was useful for its immunity to the signature moves of Psychic-type powerhouses. However, there were few Dark-type Pokemon introduced and even fewer moves to take advantage of all the typing's benefits beyond this immunity. In the generations that followed, even with better moves and Pokemon being introduced, it was pointless to run a Dark-type Pokemon or move when Ghost-type had essentially the same offensive benefits and better defensive coverage. Ghost was offensively strong against the same two types as Dark , Psychic and Ghost, while having a resistance to a type Dark was weak to, Bug, and being straight up immune to Dark's other weakness, Fighting. The only thing Dark-type could do that Ghost couldn't do was block Psychic-type attacks. That was pretty much and literally it in Generations I-V. Also, while many Dark-types wield physically oriented sta...

Black Mirror "High" Concept

Ever see Black Mirror ? If not, check it out. The first two seasons are old by today's standards, being a mere cult show until about a year ago when Netflix bought the rights and ordered more episodes. Now the show is quite popular and you can easily watch the original two seasons, the Christmas special, and the two Netflix series back-to-back to catch up. Essentially, Black Mirror is a modern Twilight Zone . Sort of. The name refers to the black screen on most electronic devices we use in the modern day. All of the episodes revolve around realistic and futuristic technology run amok, so the settings for the episodes can be a little limited compared to other anthology shows with broader concepts like Tales from the Crypt and The Outer Limits . However, the themes and twists of Black Mirror are quite prophetic for our technology-addicted modern day and, sometimes, they can be a total punch in the gut. It could be argued Black Mirror is what's called a "high concept...
