Updating Nintendo IPs

Image
I 'm an ideas guy, and let's get that straight right off the bat. I enjoy speculating and theorycrafting more than I am comfortable admitting, and if I were told to choose between spitting ideas or actually making something, well... I have to admit I would really struggle with that choice!  So by now it's probably obvious that, with this being a Nintendo-focused blog, I've already tried my hand at conceptualizing some ways Nintendo could update stagnant IPs. With rumors that they may be doing just that by utilizing the help of independent developers to save on AAA budgets, I want to make clear that my approach here is as if this were guaranteed to be the case.  If this catches your interest, excellent, please do read on! And, well, if it doesn't, then maybe just click the X and go find something more valuable to do with your time. I warned ya!

Plausible Smash Characters NOBODY Suggests: Part 1

Image
S mash speculation is kind of my thing and like so many other fans I have a million ideas of what I would like to see in this franchise.  Today, I wanted to talk about some character ideas that I think are not only interesting but actually plausible  for a future Smash game.  Every one of these characters I rarely  see brought up in community discussions, despite how fitting they would be for a future Smash Bros. game.  As a "boomer" and someone who has been part of the Smash speculation scene since the N64 era, I think all of these characters would not only engage the audience but fit right in with the current playable roster. As this is Part 1, I will discuss 3 characters that fit my qualifications above.  Next time for Part 2, expect exactly 3 more!

Smash Bros. Fighter Idea: Trixie

Image
Design:  The original design for Trixie is fairly generic. On the American box art, Trixie is a young woman drawn in the style of early American comic strips. She has black, shoulder length hair and is wearing a red leotard, red heels, and a red pair of bunny ears. She may also have bronzed(?) skin and is shown to be wearing makeup. In somewhat of a contrast, Trixie's sprite in-game opts for a "cuter" early Japanese manga appearance, like something out of  Astro Boy  or  Cyborg 009  (which was kind of common in Nintendo developed NES/Famicom games). Trixie's sprite also shows her with paler skin and a rounder face, giving her a more youthful appearance. Her outfit also appears more orange-pink (salmon?) than red, with the bunny ears being a lighter shade than the rest of the outfit. The bunny tail on her outfit is also visible when she is shown from the side, completing her "bunny girl" look. For a redesign, Trixie would look most similar to her sp

Improving Pokemon: Unused Type Combos

Image
N ow with 7 generations of games released and an 8th on the horizon, these are the current unused type combinations for Pokemon (kudos to Reddit for this image): Currently we are not sure if Pokemon Sword and Shield will include some of these new type combos (if any), so I am going strictly on what we know currently.  What follows are some of my semi-fleshed out concepts for new Pokemon based on these unused type combos, all written in my typical fashion.

Saint-type Pokemon

Image
**If you want to read my very wordy explanation of WHY I chose this particular type, scroll down to my "Exposition" well past all the other stuff** BREAKDOWN Concept The Saint-type  would be a new type for Pokemon based around the element of "holy" from traditional RPGs. Theming Monster designs and attacks would draw heavily from "sacred" and "supernatural" beings or ideas from different worldwide cultures, religions, and philosophies. This would NOT be a type where all of the Pokemon are angels and everything is based on a Medieval Christian worldview. Rather, those concepts would be part of a variety  of that includes Pokemon based on folklore and religions from all over the world. Saint-type  Pokemon are able to interact with a world beyond our own, whether they hail from it or have become disciplined enough to gain access. Throughout history, they have been used by humans to improve fortunes, provide guidance, or g

Retro Fighters for Ultimate

O ne of the glaring omissions from Smash Ultimate, for me, was the lack of a new retro fighter. Some may argue that the Belmonts or K. Rool were the retro picks for Smash Ultimate, but I disagree. While they were older, arguably obscure, characters, neither the Belmonts or K. Rool are retro in the same way fighters like Duck Hunt and ROB are retro. Here is a list of 8 retro fighters that would’ve been awesome in Smash, with a few ideas on how they could work in the games. I also threw in some of as assist trophies I would have enjoyed seeing as well. Assist Trophies: Stanley the Bugman – from Donkey Kong 3. Leaps around spraying bug repellant, which pushes players around with a windbox. He can shoot sideways, up or down. Bubbles – from Clu Clu Land. She spawns “top down” along with a bunch of glowing posts. She will dash in a straight line until hitting a pole, which causes her to spin around and switch directions. Being hit by her at any time deals damage. If she’s ab

Super Smash Bros.: One Series, One Character Challenge

T his was a challenge going around on social media that I felt like diving into. The basics of the challenge is to come up with one new character from each series in Smash Bros. Ultimate already represented with a playable fighter, plus 1 freebie "dream" character from a new franchise. I'm going to bend the rules I adhere to a bit just to be interesting, which you'll see below: Choose 1 new fighter from EACH series Each series can also receive an Echo fighter in addition to  it's new fighter The original challenge lumped the retro series into one large "Retro" category, made "Wii Fit" part of a larger "Wii" category, and the Miis were included as part of a "Smash Bros. Original" category. In the interest of switching up my options, however, I am going to instead have each individual retro series be its own category and select characters from "sister" or similar titles. Likewise, the "Mii" category wi
